Under the digital nomad strategy, foreign workers are permitted to stay in Canada for up to six months. Canada aims to strike a balance between labor demand and supply by allowing skilled workers to remain in the country, contributing to its economic growth, and making investments within local communities. In addition to addressing the current shortage, the government is focused on long-term solutions, such as extending visa permits for international workers in Canada.

Two Additional Strategies

Apart from the digital nomad strategy, the Canadian government has introduced two other programs to combat labor shortages.

1. Immigration Stream for Talented Professionals: By the end of this year, the government plans to develop an immigration stream that will enable the world’s best and most talented professionals to come to Canada under a work permit, even without a job offer. The specifics regarding candidate eligibility and the number of professional entries are yet to be disclosed.
2. Innovation Stream under the International Mobility Program: The government will create an innovation stream for skilled workers in select in-demand occupations. This program will foster collaboration with government-selected companies, contributing to Canada’s innovation goals.

Targeting American Professionals

To address the shortage of skilled workers from the United States, Canada’s immigration minister announced a special initiative. Starting July 16, the government will establish an open work permit stream that allows 10,000 American H-1B visa holders to work in Canada. Additionally, this stream will provide study and work permits for the family members of these professionals.

Smt Jaskaur Meena also mentioned that in the year 2022-23, around 3.5 lakh women in Rajasthan alone have benefited from this scheme.
