 Kochi:

A minor girl from Kerala's Thrissur district, can now go ahead with her mission to save her ailing father's life by donating a portion of her liver following a green signal given by the Kerala High Court.

The high court has allowed the 17-year-old's plea seeking exemption in her age to be a donor as prescribed under Rule 18 of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Rules, 2014.

"It is heartening to note that the unrelenting fight put up by Devananda has finally succeeded. I applaud the petitioner's fight to save her father's life. Blessed are parents who have children like Devananda," Justice V G Arun said in his order dated December 20, hailing the girl's compassion towards her father.

Taliban Bans University Education For Afghan Girls

Kabul:Afghanistan's Taliban rulers have banned university education for women nationwide, provoking condemnation from the United States and the United Nations over another assault on human rights.

Despite promising a softer rule when they seized power last year, the Taliban have ratcheted up restrictions on all aspects of women's lives, ignoring international outrage.

The Taliban cannot expect to be a legitimate member of the international community until they respect the rights of all in Afghanistan. This decision will come with consequences for the Taliban," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

"No country can thrive when half of its population is held back."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was "deeply alarmed" by the ban, his spokesman said Tuesday.

"The secretary-general reiterates that the denial of education not only violates the equal rights of women and girls, but will have a devastating impact on the country's future," Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The ban on higher education comes less than three months after thousands of girls and women sat for university entrance exams across the country, with many aspiring to choose teaching and medicine as future careers.

The universities are currently on winter break and due to reopen in March.

After the takeover of the country by the Taliban, universities were forced to implement new rules including gender-segregated classrooms and entrances, while women were only permitted to be taught by women professors or old men.

Most teenage girls across the country have already been banned from secondary school education, severely limiting university intake.

Karnataka plans to ban halal meat, to move private bill

After the hijab ban, Karnataka is contemplating a ban on halal meat ahead of the 2023 Assembly election to give its Hindutva agenda a hard push.

Bengaluru: After the hijab ban, Karnataka is contemplating a ban on halal meat ahead of the 2023 Assembly election to give its Hindutva agenda a hard push.

The Government seems to have made its groundwork by getting a private bill moved through Ravi Kumar, a member of the Upper House and the BJP’s general secretary.

The Government’s official stand is it is yet to take a call on whether it would back the bill. “Let's see when it comes; private member bill has its own position. We will see what it is,” Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is quoted as saying to news agencies.

Mr Ravi Kumar claims that halal certification is done by Muslim bodies which “charge huge fees for certification” and are making huge profits from this.

According to him, the “identity and status” of the Muslim bodies is unclear, the bill proposes that “halal certification be banned, till a recognised is authority appointed”.

Gujarat is scripting biggest solar power revolution in India. Other states can catch up

Ahmedabad/Vadodara/Surat: A taxi driver in Gujarat received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number two months ago that promised the unthinkable. An electricity bill of zero.

All that Bikhabhai Sanabhia Tadvi had to do was install a solar panel on the roof of his home in Vemardi village, outside Vadodara. He would then be part of India’s biggest residential rooftop solar breakthrough, taking place right here in his home state of Gujarat.

Tadvi, a driver from a Scheduled Tribe community, mulled it over. Installing a rooftop solar panel on his house would cost a steep Rs 1.35 lakh, and his bank wouldn’t offer him a loan. He already had dues against a house and a car loan to pay.

“I thought about it for some time, and realised I would make up the money in a few years’ time, so it was worth the investment,” Tadvi, wearing shades and a crisp white shirt, told ThePrint, standing outside his two-storey home.

Tadvi’s is one of four households planning to install solar panels in the village, but other neighbours, too, said they hoped to do so later. Vemardi has a population of around 1,200, and a literacy rate a little lower than Gujarat’s average of 78.03 per cent, according to the 2011 census.

Russia deploys Avangard missile into combat duty | Facts on 'invincible' weapon

Avangard missile is one of the six "next generation" weapons announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March 2018.

The CSIS report further claimed that this is a nuclear-capable missile with a range of over 6,000 km, a weight of about 2,000 kg, and the ability to carry a nuclear or conventional payload. The nuclear warhead on the missile is "more than 2 megatons in TNT (trinitrotoluene) equivalent," the TASS report claimed.

Avangard's manoeuvrability, according to CSIS, could make its trajectory unpredictable, complicating intercept attempts after its boost phase. There have been approximately 14 flight tests of the Avangard between 1990 and 2018, CSIS report said.

50,000 farmers gather at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan for fresh agitation. What's it for now?

The farmers have gathered after the RSS-affiliated farmers’ body, Bhartiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), gave the call for a 'Kisan Garjana' rally at the Ramlila Maidan in central Delhi. They have united under a common banner to seek relief measures to improve the condition of farmers.

The rally is a show of strength as the farmers’ union hopes to press the Centre to meet their demands, which include farm debt waiver, remunerative prices for their produce and compensation for damage to crops.

Argentina vs France FIFA World Cup highlights: Messi gets his hands on the coveted trophy, ARG are world champions

FIFA World Cup 2022 Final highlights, Argentina vs France: Argentina won the penalty shootout after one of the greatest World Cup finals of all time ended in a 3-3 draw.

The Lusail Stadium hosted what will go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, World Cup finals of all time. Argentina were cruising for much of the match, until Kylian Mbappe converted a penalty and scored a sensational equaliser to force the game into extra-time. That led to more insane football as chances flew around at both ends. Messi scored late in the second-half of extra time to seemingly win it for Argentina, only for them to concede a penalty mere seconds later. The flawless Mbappe converted that as well, thus becoming the first player since 1966 to score a hat-trick in the final of a World Cup. And yet, he ended up on the losing side, with Argentina winning the penalty shootout. Messi finally got his hands on the covetted World Cup trophy in what he said will be his last match in this tournament.

What nuclear fusion means for climate change and a cleaner future

The global fight to prevent climate change and arrest the use of fossil fuels just received a shot in the arm. The latest success in the field of nuclear fusion has suddenly made the transition to clean energy so much smoother. Power generated through nuclear energy has already been illuminating many parts of the world, including India. However, the danger encompassing the radioactive waste generated and the rare availability of the raw material — Uranium — have always been a concern. With nuclear fusion, both these problems are taken care of and the power generated is also much higher than before.

“Nuclear fusion has the potential to provide a clean, safe, and abundant source of energy, as it does not create any long-lived radioactive nuclear waste. It produces helium which is inert. Tritium is also produced, a beta emitter with a short half-life,” Dr Archana Sharma, a CMS experiment principal scientist in the Physics Department at CERN, Switzerland, told India Today.

How does it differ from existing nuclear fission reactors?

Nuclear fusion is distinct from nuclear fission in several ways. Fission splits atoms to release energy while fusion combines them to generate it and thus more energy is produced. Another advantage is that the fusion reaction needs significantly less energy to start and maintain, noted Dr Sharma.

At present, France, Ukraine, Slovakia, and Belgium generate more than half of their energy requirement through nuclear fission. Nuclear energy constitutes 69 per cent of France’s overall energy requirement, while the proportion is 3.2 per cent for India.

India successfully tests Agni V missile days after Tawang clash

India on Thursday successfully tested the nuclear capable Agni V missile capable of striking targets at ranges up to 5,000 kilometres with a very high degree of accuracy.

India successfully carried out the night trials of the Agni V nuclear-capable ballistic missile today, defence sources said. This comes days after Indian and Chinese troops clashed in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The test was carried out to validate new technologies and equipment on the missile, which is now lighter than before. The trial has proved the capability to enhance the range of the Agni V missile, if required, defence sources said on Thursday.

ABOUT AGNI V PROJECT

The Agni V project is aimed at boosting India's nuclear deterrence against China, which is known to have missiles like Dongfeng-41 having ranges between 12,000-15,000 km.

'Hosting Bin Laden, attacking Parliament..': Jaishankar slams Pak at UNSC

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday took a sharp swipe at Pakistan, apart from China, in his address at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as he spoke on multilateralism and the global challenges in the current times. Islamabad was slammed by New Delhi for hosting terrorist Osama Bin Laden, and the 2001 attack on Parliament also found a mention in his address. His comments followed remarks by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto on Kashmir.

“We are focused today on the urgency of reforming multilateralism. We will naturally have our views. There is an ongoing convergence at least that this can’t be delayed further. The effectiveness of the United Nations depends on its capacity in facing key challenges of our times - be it pandemic, climate change, conflicts or terrorism,” Jaishankar said in his address.

S Jaishankar To Visit US To Preside Over 2 High-Level Ministerial Events

 New Delhi:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will be visiting New York to preside over two High-Level Ministerial signature events under India's G20 presidency, the MEA said in a statement.

During his three-day visit starting from December 13 -15, Mr Jaishankar, on December 14, will preside over the High-Level Ministerial Open Debate on the theme of 'New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism' [NORMS].

And, on the very next day, Mr Jaishankar will preside over the High-Level Briefing on 'Global Approach to Counter Terrorism -- Challenges and Way Forward'. Both these themes have been key priorities for India during its current tenure at the UN Security Council.

The primary focus of the Open Debate on Reformed Multilateralism is to encourage all member states to seriously address the pressing need for reforms in the global governance multilateral architecture, including the long-standing reforms of the UN Security Council. The meeting will also witness briefings by the Secretary General of the United Nations and the President of the 77th UN General Assembly, according to the statement.

Separately, the High-Level Briefing on Counter-Terrorism will seek to promote consensus amongst Council Members on the broad principles of a global counter-terror architecture and aim to further build upon the Delhi Declaration adopted during the Special Meeting of the Counter-Terrorism Committee held on 28-30 October in Mumbai and New Delhi.

During the visit, Mr Jaishankar will also unveil Mahatma Gandhi's bust at the premises of the UN Headquarters. The bust, a gift from India to the United Nations, will be the first Gandhi sculpture installed at the UN Headquarters, the statement read.

EAM will also launch a 'Group of Friends for Accountability for Crimes against Peacekeepers'. During India's August 2021 Presidency of the UN Security Council, a resolution was adopted unanimously on ensuring accountability for crimes against UN peacekeepers. Along with India, the 'Group of Friends for Accountability for Crimes against Peacekeepers' will have Troop Contributing Countries such as Bangladesh, Egypt, France, Morocco and Nepal, as its co-chairs.

The EAM is also expected to hold discussions with the UN Secretary-General and President of the General Assembly, as well as bilaterally engage with his counterparts attending the High-Level Signature Events of the Indian presidency.

A special photo exhibition showcasing India's initiative on 'International Year of Millets 2023', along with a millets-based luncheon, will also be hosted by EAM for UN Secretary-General and UNSC member states, the statement added.

The initiative will use "prebunking" videos – designed to counter false claims before they become widespread – circulated on the company's YouTube platform and other social media sites.

Women constitute one-third of Internet users in India: Study

According to ‘India Inequality Report 2022: Digital Divide’ released by the NGO on Sunday, Indian women are 15 per cent less likely to own a mobile phone and 33 per cent less likely to use mobile internet services than men.

In Asia-Pacific, India fares the worst with the widest gender gap of 40.4 per cent, says the study. The recent meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on the margins of the G20 Summit in Bali doesn’t signal a rapprochement and there shouldn’t be any concerns about the US diluting its relationship with India or its commitment to the Indo-Pacific, chargĂ© d’affaires (CDA) Elizabeth Jones told a small group of Indian reporters.

Expect Russia to be part of all processes, says India on G20 presidency

India, which began its year-long G20 presidency on Thursday, and Indonesia, the previous president, played a key role in finalising a joint communique at the Bali summit amid deep divisions between Russia and the West.

The Indian government has not joined the West in openly criticising Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and it has sharply increased purchases of Russian crude and fertilisers in recent months. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting in September that today’s era is “not of war”.
