World Milk Day 2023: Know Date, Theme, Significance and History

 World Milk Day, observed every year on 1st June, was created in the year 2001 by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) to promote the consumption and benefits of milk around the world. The goal of this day is to provide us with a chance to raise awareness of and support in any manner possible initiatives related to the dairy industry.

According to worldmilkday.org, the theme of World Milk Day 2023 is “Showcasing how dairy is reducing its environmental footprint, while also providing nutritious foods and livelihoods.”

This day offers a chance to raise awareness of milk among people all over the world. The purpose of the day is to increase public knowledge of the value of milk in a balanced diet, as well as how it helps communities and livelihoods. The FAO estimates that the dairy industry supports more than one billion livelihoods and that more than six billion people around the world eat dairy products.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations established World Milk Day in 2001 as a means to acknowledge the significance of milk as a worldwide food source and to honour the dairy sector. World Milk Day was chosen as June 1 as the date was influenced by the existence of national milk days celebrated by several countries around this time. Initially, late May was considered as a potential date, but certain countries, such as China, expressed concerns about having multiple celebrations within that month. Consequently, June 1 became the preferred choice for most nations to observe World Milk Day, although some opt to hold their festivities a week or so earlier or later than this specific date. 

Health Index Report of Covid Year: Kerala and Tamil Nadu Top Performers

 The southern states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana emerged as the top performers among the larger states in the NITI Aayog’s annual health index for the Covid year of 2020-21. Among the smaller states, Tripura ranked the highest, while Delhi ranked at the bottom among the Union territories.

Health Index Report by NITI Aayog: Key Points

• The NITI Aayog, in collaboration with the Union Health Ministry and World Bank, launched the annual health index in 2017.
• This index evaluates the performance of states and Union territories based on a weighted composite score that incorporates 24 health performance indicators.
• Although the fifth health index report for 2020-21 was scheduled to be released by December 2022, it has not been made public yet.
• The NITI Aayog is said to have shared the report, titled “Healthy States Progressive India Report on the Ranks of States and Union Territories,” with the Health Ministry.
• The health index evaluates the performance of states and UTs based on two factors: year-on-year progress and overall performance. The states and UTs are categorized as ‘larger states’, ‘smaller states’, and UTs, and then ranked according to their scores.
• Among the 19 ‘larger states’, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana have emerged as the top three performers in terms of overall performance, securing first, second, and third positions respectively. On the other hand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh are positioned at the bottom of the list, ranking 19th, 18th, and 17th respectively.
• Regarding incremental performance, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Odisha have shown the greatest improvement in 2020-21 compared to their performance in 2019-20, making them the top three performers in this category.

 

New vs Old Parliament Buildings: 10 Key Features

 

1. Increased Seating Capacity: The new Parliament building will be able to accommodate 888 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Lok Sabha, three times the capacity of the current Lok Sabha. Similarly, the new Rajya Sabha will have provision for 384 seats, addressing the need for additional space for future MPs.
2. Absence of Central Hall: Unlike the old Parliament House, the new building will not feature a Central Hall. Instead, the Lok Sabha Hall in the new Parliament House is being designed to accommodate joint sessions, eliminating the need for additional chairs during such sessions.
3. Earthquake-Proof Construction: Considering Delhi’s increased seismic activity, the new Parliament building is being constructed to withstand earthquakes. It will be reinforced to withstand strong shocks in Zone 5, ensuring the safety of the occupants.
4. Peacock and Lotus Flower Theme: The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the new Parliament House will showcase distinct themes. The Lok Sabha will incorporate the national bird, the Peacock, while the Rajya Sabha will feature the national flower, the Lotus, in their respective structures.
5. Modern Technological Facilities: To enhance the technological capabilities of the House, each MP’s seat in the new Parliament House will have a multimedia display in front of it. This feature, a gift to the country on the 75th anniversary of Independence, makes it the first Parliament building constructed after India’s independence.
6. Eco-Friendly Initiatives: The new Parliament building prioritizes sustainability and eco-friendliness. It will use green construction materials and incorporate devices to save 30 percent electricity consumption. Rainwater harvesting and solar power generation systems will be implemented to promote renewable energy sources.
7. Enhanced Committee Room Facilities: The new Parliament House will include a significantly higher number of committee rooms equipped with sophisticated audio-visual systems. This upgrade will facilitate the smooth functioning of parliamentary committees.
8. Media Facilities: Special facilities for the media will be provided in the new Parliament House. A total of 530 seats will be arranged for media personnel. Both houses will have galleries for the general public to witness parliamentary proceedings, ensuring a clear view from every seat.
9. Public-Friendly Design: The new Parliament House aims to be more accessible to the public. Preparations are underway to make it a public parliament house, with easier entry for children, elderly individuals, and disabled individuals. Special entrance points will allow the general public to reach the Public Gallery and Central Constitutional Gallery. Additionally, the new building will have improved fire safety features.

10. Architectural Design and Construction: The construction of the new Parliament building is being undertaken by Tata Projects Limited, with the design by HCP Design Planning and Management Private Limited. The total area for construction is 64,500 sqm, creating a modern architectural marvel in the heart of Delhi.

    
    

PM Narendra Modi inaugurates new Parliament building

On May 28, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the new Parliament building. He arrived at Gate No. 1, wearing traditional attire, and was greeted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Accompanied by priests from Karnataka’s Shringeri Math, the Prime Minister participated in a ceremonial “Ganapati Homam” to seek divine blessings for the inauguration of the new Parliament building. Vedic chants added a spiritual atmosphere to the occasion.

IPL 2023 final: Chennai Super Kings Beats Gujarat Titians

 

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinched their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title, equaling a record with Mumbai Indians. They secured a five-wicket victory over the Gujarat Titans (GT) amidst a backdrop of fireworks and jubilant celebrations. CSK’s captain, Dhoni, received the IPL trophy and subsequently handed it over to Rayudu and Jadeja. Opting to bat first, the Gujarat Titans managed to score 214 for four, with B Sai Sudharsan playing an outstanding innings of 96 runs off 47 balls. However, due to the rain interruption, CSK’s target was adjusted to 171 runs to be chased in 15 overs.

Due to heavy rainfall, the final match scheduled for Sunday was postponed to the reserve day, which was Monday. Ultimately, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerged victorious over the defending champions, utilizing the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method. In a thrilling encounter at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium, CSK successfully completed their task on the final ball. This match holds significance as it potentially marks the last appearance of the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the T20 league.

Sourav Ganguly named as brand ambassador of Tripura Tourism

 

Former India cricket captain and ex-BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly was roped in as the brand ambassador for Tripura Tourism. Ganguly expressed his willingness to be the brand ambassador for Tripura tourism after the state’s Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury met him at his residence in Kolkata. Ganguly’s selection as the brand ambassador for Tripura Tourism is expected to draw significant attention to the state’s unexplored tourist destinations.

The Tripura government is confident that Ganguly will be a successful brand ambassador for the state. They believe that his popularity and charisma will help to attract more visitors to Tripura and boost the tourism industry. The announcement came after Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury met Ganguly at his residence in Kolkata along with state officials, and discussed the proposal. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who had earlier spoken to the former ace cricketer, expressed his confidence that Ganguly’s involvement will greatly benefit the tourism sector.

Tripura is a state in Northeast India. It is bordered by Assam and Mizoram to the east and by Bangladesh to the north, south and west. Tripura is divided into 8 districts and 23 sub-divisions, where Agartala is the capital and the largest city in the state. Tripura has 19 different tribal communities with a majority Bengali population. Bengali, English and Kokborok are the state’s official languages.

It became a full-fledged state of India in 1972. Tripura lies in a geographically isolated location in India, as only one major highway, National Highway 8, connects it with the rest of the country. Five mountain ranges — Hathai Kotor, Atharamura, Longtharai, Shakhan and Jampui Hills — run north to south, with intervening valleys; Agartala, the capital, is located on a plain to the west. The state has a tropical savanna climate, and receives seasonal heavy rains from the south west monsoon.
